Tropical Storm the storm Gains Power As It Barrels Towards Jamaica

Hurricane the storm is forecast to strengthen into a rare Category 5 storm as it turns toward the Caribbean island, delivering life-threatening flash flooding and rock falls.

The cyclone, which recorded wind speeds of up to 195 km/h as of 6:00 AM GMT, is now shifting northwest in the Caribbean region and is anticipated to hit the coast by midweek, based on data from hurricane specialists.

Advisories of power cuts and structural damage have been announced as this storm brings up to 76cm of precipitation and storm surges as high as thirteen feet above ground. "Take cover without delay," residents have been urged.

The cyclone is the 13th cyclone in this year's Atlantic hurricane season, which typically ends in late autumn.

Category Five Cyclone Risk

A Category 5 cyclone is the strongest type, with winds of at least 252 km/h.

The country's head of government the statesman stated: "I realize that there are numerous residents who are worried, who are extremely apprehensive, and with good reason: concern is justified.

"Yet the most effective method to address anxiety and any unease and worry is to remain prepared."

Inhabitants are being advised to fortify their houses with sandbags and timber panels, and to stock up on essentials.

Regional Consequences

Advisories are also ongoing for regions of Haiti such as the main city, Port au Prince, the Dominican Republic and Cuba's eastern region, where the hurricane is anticipated to bring comparable impacts by the middle portion of the coming week.

Rock slides already being caused by the hurricane have resulted in two fatalities in Haiti, according to local authorities.

Expected Trajectory

Melissa is forecast to cross the island nation by midweek before traveling via the Caribbean archipelago and out into the Atlantic.

By the time it makes contact with Cuba, it is anticipated to have reduced to a Category 3 cyclone.
