Officials in Trinidad and Tobago has confirmed it will authorize the United States military to access its airports in coming weeks. This decision occurs amid mounting strained relations between the US and nearby Venezuela.
This announcement comes after the setup of a sophisticated radar system at an airport in Tobago. Caribbean officials maintain the radar's intended role is for combating domestic crime, asserting it is not a springboard for attacks against another country.
Government opponents warn, however, that these arrangements risks pulling Trinidad and Tobago into former President Donald Trump's broader efforts against Venezuela's president Nicolás Maduro.
As per a ministry statement, US activities at the airports would be “logistical in nature”, enabling supply replenishment and standard troop rotations. The government provided no further details on the matter.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has in the past supported US operations targeting alleged drug ships in regional waters, actions that have allegedly led to dozens of deaths, including several Trinidadian citizens.
At first, Persad-Bissessar said a US C-17 aircraft that landed in Tobago was carrying marines to support a local road construction project. However, when pictures emerged of the defense system, she acknowledged that no fewer than 100 marines were stationed in the country, along with the powerful radar.
The radar, thought to be a long-range AN/TPS-80 G/ATOR, is used for air surveillance, defense, and counter-fire operations.
Trinidad and Tobago lies a mere seven miles from Venezuela at their closest point. It has two primary airports: Piarco International in Trinidad and ANR Robinson International in Tobago.
This development comes after a prior event in October, when a US naval vessel docked in Trinidad's capital, as part of the Trump administration's increased military posture against Venezuela.
