The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, revealed a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.

The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release released by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will love its presence.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.

Of course, the creators has already said that the series will have a few changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from Nov. 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
