The co-founders behind the famous ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that co-founded the business with Jerry Greenfield, announced how he plans to personally create this new flavor within a personal series showcasing issues the company was barred from speaking out about.
This latest development intensifies the ongoing conflict among the world-famous ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the British consumer goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
The co-founders maintain that the parent company along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "maintaining its activist principles".
The entrepreneur revealed via social media that he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas for naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder stated from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as a symbol of support for Palestinians because of its colors, that mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company selling the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious dessert company which was first created several years back to support former US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
The founder revealed that he will develop other frozen dessert varieties that address concerns which the company was silenced from addressing publicly by Unilever.
The announcement follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years with the organization, citing concerns regarding how its independence had been undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Mr. Cohen stated how "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work inside the company to fight for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can achieve the social mission, the values that established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
