The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-part series created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."

The previous season concluded in 2021 with a finale that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle corruption within the police force.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most delicate case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless followers watch the developments of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a new installment."

He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
