Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Icon, Dies at 81 Years Old

The world grieves the passing of Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican reggae singer and actor whose distinctive voice was instrumental in spreading the reggae genre worldwide. He passed away at the age of 81.

“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” posted his wife Latifa Chambers on Instagram. “I am grateful for his loved ones, close friends, peers in the arts and coworkers who shared his life’s path. To all his fans globally, please know that your support was his strength throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” The message was also signed by their offspring, their son and daughter.

Jimmy Cliff was beloved for hits including You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat musical style and positive temperament brought him a large and longstanding fanbase.

Beyond his music achievements, Cliff starred in the 1972’s crime drama “The Harder They Come”, a performance that was highly acclaimed and is considered a cornerstone of Jamaican cinema.

Jimmy Cliff was among the select few of musicians, including Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the prestigious Order of Merit from Jamaica.
