No fewer than 16 people lost their lives and in excess of 40 were wounded when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, officials have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.
The victims have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as âvivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting othersâ.
âHow can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?â a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She told the events before the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. âHe moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,â she recalled.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
A national of Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in critical condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the incident as an âabsolute bloodbath,â but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a âstroke of luckâ he survived.
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to âa large numberâ of gunshots.
âInitially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but itâs gone into my own skin and into my leg,â he explained. âI sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. Iâm ok.â
