Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced outrage after former President Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and declared they should be detained and sentenced "by death" following their publication of a disputed video.
The video footage, released on earlier this week, includes six Democratic lawmakers who formerly served in defense or defense positions.
"Like us, you all made an vow to safeguard and support this constitution," the representatives stated in the short video. "And right now, the dangers to our governing document aren't just from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our regulations are explicit, you can reject improper directives, you can reject illegal orders, you must reject improper directives. No one has to carry out orders that contravene the law or our constitution."
The recorded statement seemed to provoke a angry response from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate message, he stated: "This constitutes really serious, and Risky to our Nation. Their comments cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a joint declaration condemning the comments.
"Violent politics has no position in this nation," they declared. "Congress members who participated in the video all acted our country with tremendous national pride and honor. We strongly censure Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous death threats against elected officials, and urge House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with security officials "to ensure the safety of these officials and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these radical social media posts and withdraw his aggressive language before he leads to violence," the statement continued.
The officials who appeared in the video also released a response.
"We identify as ex-military personnel and security experts who value this nation and took an vow to safeguard and uphold the founding document of the United States," they said. "This commitment continues forever, and we aim to keep it. No intimidation, intimidation, or call for violence will stop us from that important duty."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president deems it subject to penalty by execution for us to restate the statutes," they continued. "Military personnel should understand that we have their protection as they carry out their pledge to the national charter and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "Every American must come together and denounce the former president's demands for our murder and political violence. This is a period for principled stance."
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is demanding the death of public representatives."
He added: "This represents an direct THREAT. All senators, each house member, every American – without partisan consideration – should denounce this without delay and without qualification."
The GOP leader defended Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "sedition", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "It is very risky, you have leading members of the government instructing soldiers to defy commands, I think that represents unprecedented in American history."
The Republican leader also reportedly told the press that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the violation of treason" but that "attorneys have to parse the language and establish all that."
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when inquired by a media member, "Is the president want to kill members of Congress?", the White House press secretary replied: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the former president is addressing," the official stated. "We see current representatives of the federal government who worked together to organize a digital communication to individuals of the national defense, to current military personnel urging them to disobey the executive's legal commands."
She stated: "The purity of our military depends on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can lead to casualties, it can lead to confusion, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are basically encouraging."
