The nation's Minister of the Interior Paul Atanga Nji has stated that political opponent Issa Tchiroma Bakary will be prosecuted over allegations that he instigated "aggressive election protests".
At least 4 protesters have been fatally wounded during clashes between law enforcement and demonstrators since the presidential election on 12 October, with President Paul Biya, aged 92 securing an eighth consecutive term.
The opposition leader asserts that he was the true winner, a claim disputed by the governing party, the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM).
Aggressive responses by security personnel on protesters have concerned the international community, with the UN, AU and European Union demanding moderation.
On Tuesday, Nji alleged Tchiroma Bakary of planning what he referred to as "unlawful" protests leading to the loss of lives, and also rebuked him for announcing success in the electoral contest.
He further stated that Tchiroma Bakary's "associates responsible for an insurrectionary plan" will also be prosecuted.
Cameroon's leader, who came to power in the early 80s and is now the oldest serving president, won the 12 October presidential election with over half of the ballots, compared to 35.2% for Tchiroma Bakary, according to the constitutional court.
The opposition figure is remains silent to the official announcement to try him, but he had previously declared that he refused to acknowledge a stolen vote - and that he was not afraid of being arrested.
On election result day, he reported that security forces used lethal force on protesters gathered near his home in Garoua, fatally wounding at least two individuals.
Recently, the government official announced that an inquiry would be launched into clashes prior to and following the declaration of the vote outcome.
"During these attacks, some of the criminals lost their lives," he said, without offering a exact count of demonstrators who have been fatally injured in the incidents.
The minister added that several personnel of the police and military also sustained major harm.
Even though Nji asserted the condition nationwide was now under control, demonstrators continue to protest in various areas of the country, especially in urban centers, where demonstrators mounted roadblocks on Tuesday, and set fire to rubber on the streets.
Experts alert that the political turmoil could plunge the nation into a governmental instability.
