Roughly 50 cars have been covered with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police state they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The substance had been applied in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then discovered multiple other vandalized cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state initial examinations suggest the liquid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; investigators are currently not informed of any injuries in relation with the incident," they stated.
City officials said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
A high-ranking official commented the attack rendered him speechless and required to be solved rapidly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the death of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in 2020.
