Are You Able to Crack It? That Overlooked Netherlands Creation That Shaped the Modern World

One can find many candidates for the title of “planet’s greatest innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.

According to a recent publication, however, that honor belongs to a mechanised timber mill invented by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.

“Prior to mechanised sawing, constructing a simple merchant vessel necessitated approximately ten lumberjacks working for three months,” notes the author. “With wind-powered lumber mills, an identical quantity of processed timber might be produced in less than a week.”

Owing to this speedy mechanical saw, which converted timber to planks using almost no human effort, Dutch builders could construct ships more quickly compared to anyone else, which sparked one hundred years of Dutch maritime, economic and cultural supremacy across the continent and the globe.

The Original True Manufacturing Device

The inventor's lumber mill, contends the writer, was “mankind’s initial authentic factory machine.” A windmill rotated a wheel. One component converted its circular movement to up-and-down action for the saw. A separate mechanism changed the rotary movement into a sideway’s motion feeding the log toward the blade. A ratchet system shifted the wood ahead a measured step per cycle.

“Each element was simple on its own. The Dutchman’s genius was to integrate them so the machine acted within a perfectly controlled sequence, sawing on every downward motion and advancing on every upward stroke. It was a remarkably intelligent application of basic parts.”
